How to Make your House Smell Luxurious - 8 Tips for a Great Smelling Home

Design and décor can really elevate a space, creating the look and feel of a place. Think about it: every home you have been in has a certain vibe, right? Laura Barry and Jim Graves have found that scent is also a form of decorating. Psychologically speaking, scent is a powerful tool, capable of raising the level of luxury a home sits at. Just as an Hermes blanket adorns a room, a finishing touch… so too can a scent. That's why agents bake cookies, 30 minutes before open houses, right? When was the last time you elevated your space with a new décor piece or scent?

Candles - Laura and Jim’s Favorite Way to Decorate a Room

Candles are like olfactory magic in a home, capable of producing scents that elevate the feeling of luxury and comfort. The carefully crafted fragrance profiles in premium candles have the power to transport us to distant places, evoke cherished memories, or simply envelop us in a cocoon of indulgent aromas. These scents, often rich and complex, can range from soothing lavender and vanilla to exotic spices, woodsy notes, or even the crisp freshness of the outdoors ie. vetiver or Palo Santo. When these captivating fragrances permeate our living spaces, they evoke a sense of sophistication and opulence, turning an ordinary room into a haven. Whether it's the comforting embrace of a warm vanilla or the invigorating zest of citrus, or blossoms, candles infuse a home with a signature scent that not only adds to the feeling of luxury but also personalizes and enriches the overall atmosphere, making it truly one's own sanctuary of refined living.

Aim for Zero odor to Start

First things first. The secret to a nose-friendly space isn't to spray fragrance on top of yucky smelling odor.

Get Rid of Any Moisture

“Moisture is the number one cause of household odors.” says Laura Barry. Not only can it create odor but it also causes significant damage and should be mediated immediatly.

Consider keeping moisture-absorbing products in smaller areas that get damp, such as bathrooms and closets. And keep an eye on micro sources of moisture, such as sponges and towels: Replace sponges at least every one to two weeks, ensure clean towels are fully dry before folding and putting them away, and hang bath mats over the shower rod to help them dry. It may seem obvious but no one wants mold or mildew!

Get To the Source

It may seem obvious but attack odor at the source. Take our the garbage, store shoes in one area with air flow. Clean drains by pouring boiling water down them. You get the idea.

Open the Windows

“It's the easiest way to bring fresh air in”, says Jim Graves, especially if you have leftover cooking smells or lingering odors from home improvement projects, such as painting. Opening a window makes your entire space feel cleaner and helps lift the mood in your home. If possible, open windows on multiple sides of your home to get a cross breeze.

Invest in a Nice Floral Arrangement

Flowers are a nice and natural way to add a little scent to your home. Look for arrangements with flowers that smell good. Some options to consider:

  • Roses

  • Jasmine

  • Freesia

  • Lavender

  • Lilacs

  • Peonies

  • Sweet pea

Clean Soft Surfaces Regularly

Carpets, throw pillows, couches, upholstery, bed linens, and window covers are magnets for bad smells. Even after a spill dries or dirt gets wiped away, odor-causing bacteria can linger. In carpets, a missed stain can lead to mold or mildew. Maker recommends having a professional steam-clean your upholstery and carpets once a year. Wash regularly and you’ll be surprised how clean and odor-free your space is!

Invest in an Air Purification System

Air purifiers can help remove contaminants in the air to keep your home smelling fresher (no scent required!). Look for HEPA air purifiers that'll help deal with microscopic contaminants, including pet dander and even viruses.
